Legislative counsel

Many people across the United States aspire to be the person their dogs think that they are, but if those canines knew about some of the weird legal statutes their owners need to obey, they might reconsider.

Here are just a few of the weird animals that have been dug up in recent law research.

In Oklahoma, Dogs Are to Be Respected, If Not Feared.

Oklahoma has a couple of weird legal statutes concerning man’s best friend. First, any one who is caught making a strange face at a dog could potentially be arrested for doing so. Second, dogs need to have a permit signed by the mayor if they want to congregate in groups of three or more. So if you’re ever in the Sooner State, you should be wary of any groups of canines you see, and definitely don’t disrespect them.

In Illinois, Dogs Aren’t Allowed to Smoke Cigars.

Zion, Illinois has a legal statute that expressly forbids dogs, cats, and other domesticated animals from smoking lit cigars. Even if you think that “Dogs Playing Poker” by C. M. Coolidge is hilarious and should be recreated, don’t do it. Tobacco is incredibly dangerous to dogs, and doing so in Zion could land you in trouble with the law.

In Wisconsin, Dogs Need to Leave Squirrels Alone.

There’s a legal statute in Madison, Wisconsin that forbids dogs from “worrying” squirrels, which begs the question of whether or not it’s okay for a dog to bark or chase a squirrel if the squirrel is okay with it. How can someone even tell if a squirrel is nervous, any ways?

Although most legal statutes are designed for a purpose — with a certain legislative intent in mind — these weird laws seem to lack any. Despite this fact, they’re still laws, and need to be respected. So don’t …

If your legislative history research has found any weird legal statutes, feel free to share them in the comments.
